Google rebuilds Shopping platform with AI interface

Google has introduced a revamped version of Google Shopping, rebuilt entirely with artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the shopping experience. The transformation integrates AI technology with the 45 billion product listings in Google’s Shopping Graph, utilising Gemini models to provide users with a more personalised and efficient online shopping platform. This upgraded version of Google Shopping is being rolled out in the U.S initially, and then continuing over the next few weeks.

AI-Enhanced Shopping Research

The new Google Shopping experience makes it easier for users to research products by presenting the most relevant options through AI-generated briefs. These briefs will then summarise the key points to consider based on a user’s search. For example, when searching for a “Men’s winter jacket for Seattle,” Google will provide an AI-generated brief that includes the most important factors to consider for the specific climate. As the article explains, “We’ll show products recommended by sources from across the web, and an explanation of why they’re a fit for your needs.” This approach helps users make informed decisions more quickly by showing organised product categories and relevant articles for further research.

Additionally, the search results will feature dynamic filters that allow users to refine their preferences, such as selecting specific sizes or locating items available nearby. Google is also integrating its virtual try-on feature, powered by generative AI and augmented reality (AR), to help users visualise how products will look, making the shopping experience even more interactive.

Personalised Shopping Experience

The new Google Shopping homepage is designed to offer a more personalized shopping experience, showing users a feed of shoppable products and videos tailored to their interests. This feed evolves based on the user’s preferences and browsing history. If a user pauses their shopping research, they can easily resume from where they left off by visiting the homepage or tapping the Google Shopping logo.

Furthermore, users can manage their personalised results through the platform’s settings. According to the article, “If you ever want to update or turn off your personalised results, you can easily manage your preferences by going to the Google Shopping menu and tapping ‘Shopping preferences’ at the bottom of the page.”

Focus on Finding the Best Deals

Google Shopping now includes a dedicated “Deals” page, where users can browse personalised deals and the latest discounts. The platform helps users find the best prices by offering tools such as price comparison, price insights, and price tracking. In their announcement, Google have stated that, “Google Shopping lets you shop every store in one place — and we’re continuing to develop more ways brands can connect directly with shoppers, whether that’s through assistive experiences like AI shopping or with rich product listing ads.”

Why is this important?

The AI-generated briefs are labeled “experimental” as they are still being fine-tuned, and Google are encouraging its users to provide feedback through the brief’s menu to help improve the feature. The revamped Google Shopping is accessible via the “Shopping Tab” in Google Search or by visiting shopping.google.com.

The new AI-powered Google Shopping is initially rolling out in the U.S. and will continue to expand in the coming weeks.
