Google’s has announced that it is expanding AI Overviews in Search to reach more than a billion global users each month by launching in over 100 countries and adding support for multiple languages.
This major expansion allows users around the world to search with AI-powered summaries, which help people find information more easily and connect with publishers, businesses, and creators online. The AI Overviews, initially launched in May in the U.S. and later expanded in August, have so far, received positive feedback with Google claiming that its users find the AI feature helpful and prefer it over traditional search results.
In this new phase, users in countries with AI Overview access can choose their preferred language, with support in English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. This means, for instance, that Spanish speakers in the United States can now access search overviews in Spanish, allowing for a more personalised search experience.
Google emphasises the importance of connecting users to quality content, noting that since May, they have added more prominent links to relevant websites within AI Overviews. This includes a right-hand link display on desktop and site icon links on mobile. Recently, they also introduced in-line links within the text of the AI Overviews, which has been successful in driving more traffic to linked websites.
“Helping people discover content from publishers, businesses and creators remains central to our approach with AI Overviews in Search,” Google stated, explaining their commitment to directing traffic to valuable content.
Why is this important?
While organic content is a focus, ads continue to appear in dedicated slots, with distinct labelling to differentiate them from regular results. For mobile users in the U.S., Google has also integrated ads into AI Overviews for relevant searches to better connect people with relevant products and brands.
In summary, AI Overviews aim to expand the types of questions users can ask and enhance the ease of discovering information online, reflecting Google’s ongoing commitment to AI-driven improvements in Search.
