Apple announce key updates to Sports App

Apple Sports, a free app for iPhone users, has rolled out new updates just in time for the NFL and European football seasons, enhancing its offerings to sports fans.

The app, which provides real-time scores, stats, and more, now includes improved features for tracking NFL and college football games. These updates feature enhanced play-by-play options, offering quick access to scoring drives alongside every play. A new dynamic drive tracker allows fans to visualise the ball’s position on the field at any moment. Fans can follow their favorite teams and, for college football, the top 25 teams, which are updated weekly.

All games will include real-time scores, statistics, and live betting odds.

With the introduction of iOS 18 and watchOS 11, the Apple Sports app will soon provide Live Activities on iPhone and Apple Watch Lock Screens. This new feature will allow users to receive live scores and play-by-play updates at a glance, directly on their lock screens. Additionally, an app update later this year will introduce a new drop-down navigation system for easier access to various scorecard views, including My Leagues, My Teams, and personalised feeds.

Enhanced search functionality will also make it simpler for users to find matches for leagues they do not currently follow.

Why is this important?

Apple Sports already covers a wide range of leagues, including the NFL, NCAA football, MLS, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NCAA basketball (both men’s and women’s), NHL, NWSL, Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Liga MX, Ligue 1, and Serie A.

The app will also add more leagues over time, such as the Champions League and Europa League, starting in September.

Designed for simplicity and speed, Apple Sports provides a personalized experience that puts users’ favorite leagues and teams at the forefront. The app’s interface is user-friendly, allowing fans to customise their scoreboards, navigate between scores and upcoming games, explore detailed play-by-play information and lineups, and easily access live games via the Apple TV app. The app also syncs with users’ favorites in the My Sports experience across Apple TV and Apple News.

Apple Sports is available for download in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, with users having the option to turn off live betting odds in the settings. For those interested in the new Live Activities feature, it requires iOS 18 and watchOS 11 or later. It’s worth noting that Live Activities will no longer be available in the Apple TV app with the release of iOS 18.
