Reddit makes its first profit in 20 years and reaches 100 million users

Reddit recently reported its first quarterly profit since going public, resulting in a significant 35% surge in its stock price. The company, known for its user-driven communities or “subreddits,” achieved a net profit of $29.9 million, alongside a strong revenue of $348.4 million, marking a 68% year-over-year increase and surpassing analyst expectations. This financial growth has been partly attributed to Reddit’s strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) and successful partnerships.

One of the company’s main growth drivers has been a new AI-powered translation feature, which allows English-language posts to be translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and German. This tool contributed to a substantial 47% increase in monthly active users, pushing Reddit’s user base to nearly 100 million. CEO Steve Huffman indicated that Reddit plans to expand this feature to additional languages to broaden its global reach.

Additionally, Reddit has entered profitable content licensing agreements with tech giants Google and OpenAI, allowing its vast user-generated data to be used for AI model training.

Why is this important?

These partnerships have significantly bolstered revenue, as both Google and OpenAI leverage Reddit’s diverse content to enhance their language models. Furthermore, Reddit’s collaborations with major sports organisations, including the NBA, have enhanced its appeal to advertisers, allowing the platform to attract more ad revenue, particularly within the sports content sector.

Reddit’s projected revenue for the current quarter is expected to exceed Wall Street forecasts, driven by ongoing AI content licensing deals and robust digital advertising growth. Reddit’s recent profitability announcement also reflects a broader trend of tech companies leveraging AI innovations and strategic partnerships to boost user engagement and revenue.
