Snapchat has launched its first generative AI-powered video Lenses, marking a new milestone in creative content for its users. These cutting-edge features are available exclusively to Snapchat+ Platinum subscribers, who now have access to a suite of Lenses that use artificial intelligence to generate dynamic, visually rich videos.
The new AI Lenses include three initial experiences: “Raccoon” and “Fox,” which animate lifelike animals into the user’s real-world environment, and “Spring Flowers,” which zooms out to reveal the user holding a vibrant bouquet. The technology behind these effects is Snap’s in-house generative video model, designed to bring high-quality augmented reality (AR) to users with minimal effort. Once a user captures a Snap using one of these Lenses, the video is processed in the background, then saved to their Memories for easy viewing and sharing.
Snapchat plans to release new AI-powered Lenses each week, continuously expanding the app’s creative potential. This initiative is part of Snap’s broader push to integrate generative AI into both user-facing tools and developer resources. Within Lens Studio, creators can now use text or image prompts to design 3D objects and facial effects, making complex AR development more accessible. Integration with ChatGPT also enables the creation of interactive Lenses that can respond to user queries, opening up exciting possibilities for educational and conversational experiences.
Why is this important?
This move is significant because it represents the convergence of generative AI and mainstream social media. By embedding powerful AI tools into its platform, Snapchat is democratising access to advanced creative technologies. What once required high-level technical skill is now achievable with just a few taps. This shift not only empowers everyday users to express themselves in novel ways, but it also creates fresh opportunities for artists, educators, and brands to connect with audiences through immersive, personalised content. As platforms like Snapchat lead the charge, AI-driven creativity is poised to become a defining feature of the digital social experience.
